Frequently Asked Questions

We realise that joining a cycling club may seem quite daunting if you are new to cycling or are unsure of your level of fitness. You may not feel comfortable asking some of the basic questions that we as club members take for granted. So here are some answers to the questions you may be asking yourself, however, should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. We are always happy to offer advice where possible even if you choose not to join DVCC.

Do I need to be a member to come on a club run?

No, you do not need to join before coming on our rides. You are welcome on our rides as a 'visitor' until you decide whether or not to join. If you become a regular club run rider then we would expect you to join.

How often do you meet for club runs?

At the present time we have a club run each Wednesday (weather permitting), starting from Brigham Church, Nr Cockermouth at 9:30am.

We are in the process of organising a Sunday run also starting from Brigham Church at 9:30am (details to be finalised).

What distance and pace should I expect on a club run?

We are very flexible, but during the Spring and Summer months our runs are usually 40 - 60 miles at an average speed of 14 - 17 mph with an obligatory cafe stop!

Both distance and pace tend to be lower during the Winter months.

Do you use quiet roads?

Yes we do, our most popular routes use quiet roads.

What would I need to have with me on a club run?

The basic requirements are: A bike in good working order, essential spares such as an inner tube, tyre levers and a pump plus some cash for the all important cafe stop.

How do members keep in touch?

We have an informal meeting on the last Tuesday of each month in the Grey Goat Inn, St Helens Street, Cockermouth. The club has a periodic newsletter which is circulated to members and of course this website.

What about insurance?

You take part in club activities entirely at your own risk and should always accept responsibility for your own conduct and safety, including the safety of your bicycle and equipment. We strongly recommend that you take out appropriate third party insurance cover such as that offered by British Cycling or the CTC.

If I wish to join what should I do next?

You can download an application form from the 'Join Us' page or contact Janet or Ivan Morris on 01900 825330 or alternatively get in touch through our 'Contact Us' page.
